Barkley (1994) defines Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD as "a developmental disorder in self-control".
Are these sentences familiar to you?
*"My son needs me to sit next to him when he does his homework."
*"My daughter often loses things."
*"My daughter hs difficulty in finishing the assignments she receives"
*"My son can't concentrate and is easily distracted".
So what is ADHD?
It is a neurobiological disorder which is usually discovered in early childhood.
What ADHD is not:
* It is rarely a temporary condition which you grow out of as you get older.
* It's not the fault of the parents failing to educate theirchildren .
* It is not a sign of innate badness in a child.
Who is at risk?
* Heredity is the most common cause, also head injuries, taking drugs, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, being exposed to environmental pollutants such as lead, and oxygen deprivation during birth.
* Underweight or overweight at birth, premature or delayed birth.
Do you know people who have a selective attention span, are impulsive and find it difficult to delay gratification?
They have difficulty in controlling their impulses and lack an internal voice or "concience" to guide them, so they are ruled by the here and now. These chidren or adults cannot sit still or be quiet. They are always fidgeting and talking. They are not bad. Perhaps their ADHD wasn't diagnosed and they don't know why everyday life is such a challenge for them. They don't understand why they have social difficulties, why they are always chronically late, why they are totally disorganised in everything they do,why they misread socail situations and tend to blame others and why they are impolite.
Nevertheless, researchers have discovered similarities in the brain structure and functioning between people with ADHD and highly creative people. Both have the ability to allow thoughts to enter spontaneously , without censuring them, which contributes to creative thinking. These people have an advantage in professions such as : communication, the cinema, the theater, marketing, management and sport.
